Pigeon Chess Set

There's a saying that you shouldn't play chess with pigeons... but you know what? I will! Literally! And you can too with this silly chess set I created... To start off, I really like pigeons. I think they're cute birds, with the fancy pigeon breeds being very interestingly shaped and diverse, and I wanted to take that saying I mentioned literally.  When making the pieces, I wanted to take some characteristics of the pigeons and apply them to the functions and the look of the chess pieces. The birds and pieces go as follows: King -- Capuchine Pigeon, this bird looked really fancy like it was wearing a robe Queen -- Fantail Pigeon, this bird also looked fancy and elegant Bishop -- Ramsey Loft Pigeon, has some head feathers that I could exaggerate on the piece to look similar to how the bishop looks Knight -- English Carrier Pigeon, has a long neck, and I could model it rearing its head like the knight piece, and this bird is known for its far flying distance, and though it w...

Project 2: Process

                              After my initial concept, I decided to change it a bit. I had thought about how if this item was to be used with the focus on the desktop purpose, would it get in the way if it was placed on the desk itself? I then thought about placing it on the wall to solve this issue and eventually had the idea of making a pegboard organizer and adapting my concept to it. The idea, while solving the issue, also held a lot of my initial concepts when it came to storage, displaying, and customization. I played around with the idea of using organic shapes and with these shapes being a bit more unconventional but functional to hold whatever a person would want to display or for storage. I also wanted the pegboard to mimic these organized shapes rather than just a straight edge square. I thought it would make the item consistent as well as visually interesting. SURFACE DESIGN: Sketch and refinements

 As most of the photos I had taken of patterns were either geometrical or organic in shape, I thought it would be interesting to combine both of these aspects together in my own design.  I started with laying out lines for my design, using tools like rotate and mirror to create it. Then with different coloured layers, the hatching tool fills in those lines and creates the shapes of the pattern. With my design, I tried to contrast geometric and organic forms. I also wanted the colours to be a gradient from orange to purple, bringing in the eye of the viewer. However, through peer review, the colours did make it hard to differentiate the different shapes. I also found that after a while, the colours strained my eyes a bit due to the brightness of the hues. I decided to change the colouring to make the design more clear and easy to look at.
