Project 2: Revisted Bespoken Project...

 For this project, I decided to approach my shelf concept again. I thought it would be interesting to try and approach the same concept but do a complete 180.

I thought about approaching this project more by highlighting the functions of a shelf rather than the design of it and how it could benefit me. 


Aspects of this shelf I am thinking about include:
  • Be used on a desktop - avoids the work of putting it on a wall, can function for desktop purposes like holding pens or paper, etc
  • Travel/moving capability - since it's not on a wall and is on a desk, it can be conveniently removed from a space to be put in another space, or rough for travel
  • Can be used as storage -  Depending on the design I choose, I want to add on to the moving capability and have the shelf double as a way to store items
  • Can be easily assembled: Might be in easy-to-assemble pieces or collapsible

For materials, I am thinking about doing 3D printing as I can control the thicknesses of each part if need be, and make different shapes that I might not be able to do on the laser cutter.

Bespoken Project Process 2

 This process is more focused on fabricating the shelf. After finishing it up on Rhino, I decided to first make a prototype with plywood to see if my design actually worked. This also allowed me to see what would go wrong early on and, therefore, fix it before finalization. Having to put this design together physically showed some challenges. For starters, It made me think of the size of my design vs the size of the available wood space. This led me to the decision to separate some more of the parts of the design. For example, I did this with the back part of the shelf as I felt like it wasn't able to print it all without going over the wood. I also created testing bits to see if things would slide and interlock correctly as I wanted some parts of the design to interlock with each other. Bespoken Project Process 1

 I decided to go forward with my shelf concept from the last post. I developed it more on paper, wanting it to be centred around the sun and moon, with the concept of an eclipse. With this, I also wanted the shelf to be inspired by the Art Nouveau style, using organic and swirl-like forms. I began drawing out my shelf on Rhino and making a rough 3D model of it in the program to test out my ideas as I wanted to make sure they were feasible. I could also check if the proportions were right. I plan on laser-cutting this project after all, and I want to make sure everything works. I would also work on adjustments on paper before making them on Rhino when I modelled, and working like this also helped me come up with new ideas.
